Skincare routine

I’m trying out to a mostly natural and extensive skincare routine and so far this is what I came up with.

Skin type/ condition

I can say that I am combination skin type with oily t-zone and dry cheek and jaw area. I had few breakouts growing up, mostly on my forehead and back while my legs and arms are extremely dry. It was like that until my late college years.

Through the years I feel like my skin became more and more textured. I feel like I have visible pores.

History

When I was in gradeschool to early highschool, around 11-13 years old, I started having breakouts on my forehead. Aside from being genetically predisposed to it, having bangs and the heat and pollution here in the Philippines added to it. Not to mention going through puberty when hormones are going haywire.

I started using a gentle cleanser from Clean and Clear. This helped my pimples to calm down but they do come up once in a while. I’m also thankful that it didn’t leave pimple marks.

This turned my face dryer which is why I switched to Celeteque’s Hydration line.

I also commuted and went out more so I needed a good toner to keep my face clean.

This worked for me for a while but when my face got used to it, I returned to being dry. I barely use make up at this point so I think it’s just that my skin got used to it.

This is when I tried to experiment with things but I was still on a budget until I came up with my current routine.

Skincare routine

FACE

I have my regular and pamper day products and I will discuss both.

Bioré Miscellar Water

(CTTO: google images)

Before this, I just used regular wet wipes to remove my makeup but removing mascara is way too hard.

How I use it: I put a few drops on a cotton pad and wipe it across my face. I do this twice or thrice depending on how much makeup I wore that day.

Tip: when I have days when the whole routine seems too much I just use this and go directly to sleep since it’s also moisturizing. (Please don’t do this often.)

Humanheartnature Nourishing Facial Wash

I’m just on my first bottle but I’m loving this product. I think I was using celeteque hydrating facial wash before this.

I like this facial wash since it does not leave my skin feeling tight after washing but I still feel that my skin is cleansed.

How I use it: I wet my face and put a button sized amount on my palms before lathering it on my face before I rinse it off with tap water.

Thayer’s Witch Hazel Toner Rose Petal

This toner did wonders to my skin. It didn’t actually close my pores or anything but it decreased unnecessary oil production. It also kept my face clean. There were less whiteheads also. Purging did not happen. It always leave my face clean without stripping off moisture.

Masks

I change my mask from time to time or I double or multi-mask depending on my skin condition that time. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Origins charcoal mask

CTTO:google images
This is a wash off mask that promises to deep clean. This does the job but it leaves the skin a bit dry. I paired this with other origins products.

  • Humanheartnature Detoxifying Mask+Scrub

This is a new favorite. It’s an all natural product that doubles as a scrub. Use it dry as a mask and wet as a scrub. I like it because it’s not that abrasive. This lifts off any dirt on my face even white heads. Sometimes you just need to wipe it off using a towel but most of the time I pair this with a peel off mask to deep clean my pores.

  • Iwhite korea peel off mask

This is my preferred brand to match humanheartnature’s mask+scrub. This can be used alone also. I suggest you use iWhite pore purifying balm that comes with it for it to work well. This leaves my skin clean and a bit smoother.

  • Aztec Indian Healing Clay

The world’s best clay mask. I use this with Braggs apple cider vinegar instead of water. You just have to get past the smell but this works well. It deep cleans the face and leaves skin smooth. Unlike the humanheartnature, I use this alone since it literally strips away the moisture on my face (I feel cemented everytime I use this). Don’t forget to moisturize after using this.

Serum

I have yet to find the best serum but as of now, I’m using ejulai propolis. This leaves my skin supple and soft everytime I use it.

Sheet masks

I vary sheet masks from time to time. I like the moisturizing, calming and brightening variants. I prefer buying from the face shop but innisfree masks are also great.

Moisturizer

Currently using humanheartnature’s day and night moisturizer. I tried to switch to all natural products and this does the job. This leaves my skin moisturized and the scent is subtle so it doesn’t bother me.

photo from google

When I really want to pamper myself, I use Clinique’s dramatically different lotion. I also use this when my skin is extremely dry.

Sunblock

I’m currently alternating between two sunblocks. One is Happy Skin’s Catch the Sun SPF 40 PA+++ while the other one is Belo Beauty’s tinted sunscreen.

I personally prefer Happy Skin’s sunblock because I feel that this is easily absorbed by the skin and it doesn’t cause white heads. It also layers beautifully under makeup although I don’t use this as a primer (because it’s a sunblock not a primer). It’s lightweight and I feel that it’s a bit moisturizing. I sometimes use this on my body too.

On the other hand, when I have to have a little bit of coverage while having sun protection, I use Belo’s tinted sunscreen. I just make sure I exfoliate or even mask afterwards since I feel that the tint clogs up my pores.

BODY

Soap

I use Humanheartnature’s lavender mint soap in which I have a review on. Click here.

Exfoliator

I use St Ives Apricot both on my face and body. I sometimes alternate this with the Humanheartnature’s detoxifying mask+scrub, the one that I discussed earlier. I like that it’s not too fine and it’s not too rough and both of them leaves my skin feeling smoother afterwards. I exfoliate once or twice a week.

Nivea in shower lotion

This is my holy grail. I don’t like the additional step of going out of the shower and putting on sticky lotion. I hate the sticky feeling that comes with regular lotion so for something that I could rinse off the slimy feeling away, I highly recommend this product. Continued use improves skin’s appearance. It really moisturizes the skin.

Overall thoughts:

Currently loving the condition of my skin. I rarely have pimples and I can comfortably go outside without makeup. Going more natural really helped my skin.

Food

Nomi Matcha & Acai

I’m personally not a fan of matcha and matcha flavored things but I’m willing to try it especially when packed in a unique way.

My friends and I tried this matcha cafe and BGC and I might say, it did not disappoint.

Restaurant details

Ambiance

I wasn’t able to take photos of the place but I’ll try to be as descriptive as I can.

The place is dainty, walls were painted with a light millenial pink with green accents. Comfortable couches were placed although there are still some wooden chairs. On the table that we sat on, we sat on a small sofa instead of separate chairs. There were also cubicles that let’s you have more privacy, I noticed that people staying there usually have their laptops on, probably working or whatever. But on these places, matcha puns were written on thought bubbles. Very instagram friendly.

I also noticed that they put in details that people will not easily notice like the fake grass enclosed in their long glass tables. They also had matcha facts around the place.

The place was very cozy and quiet, it would allow you to focus on your work or just have your relaxation time.

Price/Serving

The food is pricey. I was shocked that a piece of smore (literally one marshmallow about 1-2 inches) costs around 250 pesos. The serving was too small for the price but you’re also paying for the ambiance.

Presentation

I might say, hands down to the presentation. Everything looks pretty, as millenials would say, instagram worthy.

Photo above: matcha mix platter (legendary greenies, matcha churros, tea-ramisu dream and green cookie monster)

The smores was kinda underwhelming but it was a blessing in disguise that the smore wasn’t that frozen so they torched it in front of us.

They’re drinks are also dainty, it’s my first time to see a restaurant serve a drink with bamboo straws.

If I’m not mistaken, it’s the banana tropics drink.

Taste

Their desserts vary in terms of how strong the matcha flavor is. Personally, I don’t like how it tastes. I feel that I’m eating grass, (I know people would react violently to this) but some of their desserts are good.

The frozen smores were good, the earthy taste of the matcha ice cream compliments the sweetness of the torched marshmallow. The irony of hot and cold got me too.

The mix platter was a good deal, I suggest you get that if it’s your first time to try the place.

Out of the four desserts, I liked the churros most and the tiramisu least.

The churros was crisp (not crunchy) and the matcha cream filling blends with the cocoa-ey taste of the churro itself.

The cookie was okay, it’ s a cookie with a hint of matcha.

The legendary greenies (brownies but it’s green) and tiramisu was too overpowering for me. It had the most matcha powder and the flavor was too intense for me. My friends liked it though.

Service

Service was quite good, not annoyingly too much but they still cater to your needs. 4/5 for service.

Overall thoughts

It’s a dainty and cute cafe. The menu was interesting and true to it’s theme. The desserts were well thought of. I would suggest it to a friend.

HIIT vs Yoga

If you’ve been following my blog since it started, you’ll know that I am a yoga practitioner, a yogini if you will but because of a friend, I was able to try HIIT as well and here are my thoughts.

High intensity interval training (HIIT)
HIIT is a cardio session arranged as short bursts of very hard work. The whole point of high-intensity training is to kick up the intensity of your cardio. In order to qualify as true HIIT, you’ll need to push yourself to the max during every set. Rests are important in HIIT.

Exerpt from self.com

HOW IT WENT

So my friend, Jeremy, does hiit all the time and he brought me to his home gym.

The session started with stretches and warm up which my friend helped me with. The coach only went in when it was the actual workout.

The coach explained the sets that were prepared that day and explained the form and all before all the exercises started. Once everything was clear, he set the time (25 minutes) then everyone was set on their own to finish the set of exercises.

Boy oh boy, this was probably the most number of jumping jacks that I did my whole life.

Exercises consisted of 100 jumping jacks or single unders in intervals of 10 20 30 40 50 dead lifts.

After 25 minutes, a few minutes rest to hydrate and wipe up. Cool down and stretches were done.

HOW IT FELT

It was okay right after. I felt hungry and a little more energetic than usual but is still very tired. The next day was fine as well. I was able to go to work happy and finished my day just as I would any other day.

The 2nd day after though was a different story. I had back pains and my legs were a bit sore. This lasted for about 3 days, not to mention the fact that I only did half of the set.

YOGA
Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India. There is a broad variety of yoga schools, practices, and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

In this part we will focus on asana practice.

HOW IT WENT

Practices vary on how it starts depending on the teacher. Some practices start with encantations in sanskrit honoring the teachers. Most practices allow you to set an intention for your practice that day.

Teachers adjust the students when poses are not in good form.

Movements are related to one another, preparing you from one pose to another until you achieve your intention or peak pose.

Every movement is synchronised with the breath.

Practice ends in a resting pose (chavasana) followed by cleansing breathes and greeting each other after the practice.

HOW IT FEELS

Yoga relaxes and calms me after the session. There are also times when sessions would have the pick me up vibe to it depending on the class attended. My muscle pains and tension gradually decreased when I practiced more.

Overall thoughts

Personally, I would pick yoga over HIIT because of the gentleness of it. It also has other benefits in terms of mental and spiritual health.

However, I can see why people would like HIIT as a form of physical exercise. I can see that this would help you lose weight fast and the feeling of finishing the sets is quite fulfilling. It probably just needs some getting used to for me. It would probably be best to alternate these types of physical activities just to balance things out. 🙂 It really depends on your personality.

How about you, which one will you pick?

Skin care

Belo tinted sunscreen

Having a good sunscreen is a necessity right now. May it be for the beach or everday, sunscreen helps us take care of our skin while we carry out with our activities.

Recently, Filipino YouTubers have been raving about this product. That was probably a sponsored post but I still decided to try it out myself.

Product description:

Belo SunExpert Tinted Sunscreen is rated SPF50 and PA++++ for broad spectrum protection against harmful UV rays. Its light tint benefits from Tone Adapt Technology that evens out your skin tone and conceals fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots. And it has Cell Protect defends against premature skin aging.

From: the sample room

Price

I got my 10ml tube for less than 200 pesos. Im not sure if it’s 150 or 199.

Application

This product says that it should be applied with the hands. This product dries quickly but gives you time to work it in and blend it.

Feel/Appearance

It doesn’t feel tacky nor drying. It sets as a matte finish. Sheer coverage for this one so for me having the tint is unnecessary. If you have flawless skin then yes, but my redness still shows up.

I also saw that after wearing it for quite some time, it settles in my pores. I also wouldn’t recommend this to people with dry skin because it might flake out on you.

Longevity

The coverage is sheer from the start so I don’t think it lasted long but I’m sure the sun protection lasted long.

Packaging

It comes in a squeezy tube for both sizes. Hygienic and travel friendly.

Overall thoughts

It’s an okay product, however, I will not repurchase it. I don’t like that it settles on my pores. I would just use my regular sunscreen since it doesn’t give much coverage anyway.

Make up

Nyx Powder Puff Lippie

Here we are again with another lipstick. However, this one is intriguing because of it’s unique applicator and claims.

Product description

Screenshot from nyx cosmetics website

Price

$8.50

Packaging

It comes in a unicarton. The lipstick itself is in a squeezy tube with the color matching the shade and a black plastic cap. The packaging also feels velvety

Application

It comes with a round cushiony applicator which can be difficult to work with when lining the edges of your lips. Aside from that, it applies smoothly.

Feel/Scent

True to its claims, it feels lightweight and sort of powdery. It’s very comfortable on the lips. It has a subtle sweet custardy smell to it. Or vanilla. I can’t differentiate it.

Color payoff

Medium to full coverage. You can easily see the color with just one layer. The dark edges of my lips are still visible but it’s not that obvious. I’m pretty pleased with this one.

Longevity

It barely transfers. I drink a lot throughout the day and observed that there was minimal to no transfer. I almost forgot that I was wearing lipstick.

However, as any lipstick would, it would easily come off when you eat.

Overall thoughts

I love the feel and the color payoff of this product. They also have other great color selections. It is affordable and can be used everday. I just wish the applicator was a little bit more pointed rather than being too rounded for easier application.

Food

Backyard Kitchen + Brew

I rarely go to UPTown mall so we decided to eat in a restaurant that we haven’t tried. I searched up and there were a few recommendations but going through a mall can be confusing sometimes. So we landed here, and in all fairness, it wasn’t a bad idea.

Restaurant details:

Branches:

  • L2 UP Town Center, Katipunan Brgy UP Campus 961 5717
  • Lower Ground Floor, Circuit Lance, Brgy Carmona, Makati City 960 9629
  • GF, The Grove by Rockwell C5, Brgy Ugong, Pasig City 941 1895
  • 4F UPTown Mall, 9th Avenue 36th Street, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City 960 4148

Opening hours: Mall hours

Ambiance

I don’t know how to describe it but it has sort of cowboy-y but kinda rustic feel to it. The place feels like a barbecue in your backyard. That’s probably how I would describe it. I like that the place is not crowded and the couches and even the tables and chairs are ab bit apart so you feel that you have your privacy despite being in a mall.

Service

I like how they are attentive and yet they don’t mind you when you don’t want them to. They can respect privacy and not check up on you too much that it gets annoying. They serve fast and they get things right.

Price

I say for the type of food that they serve, it is a little bit pricey. Food ranges from P249 pesos upwards. Probably because we can say that they “bedazzle” common food. Not too much to complain.

Food

When they say that this is the food, they mean it. True to the description on their menu. However, I feel that there is nothing special about the menu, they just deliver what they have well. For example:

I ordered thrice- cooked crispy pork cheek which is essentially a fancy version of lechon kawali. They served it on top of brown/black rice with caramelized onions and cherry tomatoes.

It is crispy, yes, it tastes good, yes but I feel that there are other restaurants that can serve this the same way that they did. I do have to commend their plating, though. Slow clap for them.

My boyfriend ordered their version of pares (I can’t remember how they call it and zomato’s menu is not updated, I’m sorry). It tasted like pares, nothing special about it.

side note: what is PARES?

The term Pares commonly refers to Beef Pares, a braised beef meal served with rice and a bowl of soup that originates from the Philippines. (from google)

It had that distinct Chinese cuisine taste to it, which is common in pares. It’s fine.

Overall thoughts:

It’s an okay restaurant. I don’t think it’s anything that I would crave or go back to because I really want to but if I am within the vicinity, I probably would eat there again. three stars.
