Lab’i experience

The ultimate experience for the lipstick junkie is now here in the Philippines. I’ve been wanting to do this since I heard that bite beauty in New York offers it but of course, it’s not that feasible at the moment. HOWEVER! Recently, it became available in the Philippines through Lab’i.

Situated in eastwood citywalk 2, Lab’i offers the experience and also using natural ingredients.

Getting there

Since I’m from the south, I really needed to set time to go there. I wasn’t really familiar with the area so I kind of had a hard time locating eastwood city walk 2. However, once you located eastwood citywalk 2 it’s pretty close to the entrance and easy to spot. Just look for chatime and it’s just a few stores away.

The store

Prices

They offer different versions of the make your own lipstick, they have one where you would pick from the variety of colors that they have and the staff would mix and make the lipstick for you which costs 780 pesos. The experience where you would pick from their shade range (and/or mix some shades) and you will be the one to make the lipstick costs 1500 pesos while the full experience, making your own shade and making your own lipstick is 3300 pesos.

Additional prices for matte or semi matte finish as well as specialty cases depending on your package is .

The experience

For me, I picked out the second package where I’d mix colors from their shade range and do the lipstick myself. I personally cannot stand glossy lipsticks which is the default so I opted to have it semi-matte (additional 60 pesos).

First, I was asked to pick from the shades that they have. It was organized and the staff were knowledgeable about which shades would match you depending on your skin tone.

I wasn’t able to ask what are the names of the shades that I picked but it was both from the wine-colored shades.

The staff then scraped off from the tester and mixed it for me to try it and see it together. They had disposable doe foot applicators so you can apply it on your lips while being hygienic. Once I was happy with the color, the staff then prepared the pigments and the materials to be used.

My boyfriend got my phone so I’m missing some photos and most of my photos have texts on them. I’m sorry but this will have to do.

They provided me with a small beaker where the pigments are, a scraper, the mold, a (fancy) stirrer, a brush and a small metal spatula. Gloves were provided as well and a small stove was already on the table.

First I was asked to mix in the pigments, vitamin E and the powder for the semi matte finish very well using the brush. This seemed easy until when it’s almost smooth as you have to keep stirring until it’s almost like melted chocolate texture. The staff was reminding me to scrape off excess pigment that gets stuck on the beaker so we can maixmize the materials.

Afterwards, we already put in the wax beads and then placed it on the stove. While it’s there, I still had to keep on mixing using the stirrer so that the wax will be fully incorporated to the mixture. I think this was also the part where we put the essential oils. I picked lavender of course!

Afterwards we quickly poured it into the mold. The staff said it should be quick since the wax sets fast. It also should be done in one pour so that the lipstick wont be broken.

2 pours were needed since the initial pour made the lipstick hollow in the middle. This was actually quicker than I expected. We waited around 5 minutes before starting to put it in its case.

Now the fun part, putting it in the case that I picked and finally seeing the lipstick that I made.

The hard part was making sure that it’s centered so that the lipstick will not touch the sides of the case.

And finally with one quick go, I was able to see my lipstick.

The formula

Here is the shade on my lips

It isn’t the most opaque. It’s not the one swipe goodness that other lipsticks are offering. It’s definitely not transfer proof. However, it promises that lips will feel more moisturised and healthy with consistent use. It’s definitely light weight and great for daily use.

However, the scent from the essential oil can be bothering and it can sometimes be tasted when the lipstick is newly applied and you drink or eat. Otherwise, it’s a good lipstick.

Would I do it again? Yes. Definitely.

Is it worth it. YES!

Honeybun Cosmetics Cleansing and Moisturizing Shampoo Bar

I have been looking for eco-friendly alternatives for the last few months. I started by using bamboo toothbrushes then metal straws and now, almost a hype, shampoo bars. I went crazy shopping for shampoo bars so expect a few of these reviews.

Starting off this series with HONEYBUN COSMETICS.

well this one is a bit tricky to get your hands on, I got this from a Facebook group I’m a member of. They sell korean skincare products and lately they have been producing their own product line. I have their EO blends which I love to use when I need to calm my nerves. They also have perfume imitations and lately the ever famous shampoo bars.

Packaging

This came in wrapped in cling wrap with a printed sticker on top. I wish it was wrapped in paper or a more eco friendly alternative although I kinda get why they had to put it in plastic.

Mine came in crushed. I was even scared that it might spill in my bag. The seller advised me to wet it and mold it back again.

Initial use

Unfortunately, I do not have anything to compare it with yet. It definitely needs some getting used to. It feels different than regular shampoo that is readily available in stores. It felt a bit rubbery and way too squeaky clean. I also got annoyed since I initially used it crushed (before I talked to the seller). It is hard to rinse off that way and crumbs of the shampoo bar got stuck to my hair. I had to wash my hair again and took me thrice as long to wash my hair.

A month into it

I’ve been using it for a month and I’m loving it so far. I found out tricks on how it will work. The molding it back helped a lot and I figured that you just have to rub it on your hands first before massaging it on your hair.

The rubbery feeling is still there but it feels less and just the squeaky clean feeling.

The time that I allot to hair washing was back to normal already when I got the hang of it.

I figured that you just have to use conditioner from time to time (in my case at least once a week).

Pros and Cons

PROS

  • Eco-friendly
  • Affordable (i remember buying it for 50-70 pesos)
  • Long lasting (given I have short hair, this could last me 3 months)
  • Smells good
  • Helps with dandruff (I did not have dandruff even if I switched)
  • All naturaL

CONS

  • Packaging – plastic (although the seller might sell it in plastic tubs next pre-order)
  • Not that durable- mine came in crushed but it’s moldable.
  • Smell is not long lasting but it keeps you smelling okay not fragrant but not foul either.

Would I recommend it? Definitely!

It’s the cheapest that I’ve found in the market so far and it works just fine. The seller is also nice and she takes in comments and improves all her products.

Skin care

Skincare routine

I’m trying out to a mostly natural and extensive skincare routine and so far this is what I came up with.

Skin type/ condition

I can say that I am combination skin type with oily t-zone and dry cheek and jaw area. I had few breakouts growing up, mostly on my forehead and back while my legs and arms are extremely dry. It was like that until my late college years.

Through the years I feel like my skin became more and more textured. I feel like I have visible pores.

History

When I was in gradeschool to early highschool, around 11-13 years old, I started having breakouts on my forehead. Aside from being genetically predisposed to it, having bangs and the heat and pollution here in the Philippines added to it. Not to mention going through puberty when hormones are going haywire.

I started using a gentle cleanser from Clean and Clear. This helped my pimples to calm down but they do come up once in a while. I’m also thankful that it didn’t leave pimple marks.

This turned my face dryer which is why I switched to Celeteque’s Hydration line.

photo above from google

I also commuted and went out more so I needed a good toner to keep my face clean.

This worked for me for a while but when my face got used to it, I returned to being dry. I barely use make up at this point so I think it’s just that my skin got used to it.

This is when I tried to experiment with things but I was still on a budget until I came up with my current routine.

Skincare routine

FACE

I have my regular and pamper day products and I will discuss both.

Bioré Miscellar Water

(CTTO: google images)

Before this, I just used regular wet wipes to remove my makeup but removing mascara is way too hard.

How I use it: I put a few drops on a cotton pad and wipe it across my face. I do this twice or thrice depending on how much makeup I wore that day.

Tip: when I have days when the whole routine seems too much I just use this and go directly to sleep since it’s also moisturizing. (Please don’t do this often.)

Humanheartnature Nourishing Facial Wash

I’m just on my first bottle but I’m loving this product. I think I was using celeteque hydrating facial wash before this.

I like this facial wash since it does not leave my skin feeling tight after washing but I still feel that my skin is cleansed.

How I use it: I wet my face and put a button sized amount on my palms before lathering it on my face before I rinse it off with tap water.

Thayer’s Witch Hazel Toner Rose Petal

This toner did wonders to my skin. It didn’t actually close my pores or anything but it decreased unnecessary oil production. It also kept my face clean. There were less whiteheads also. Purging did not happen. It always leave my face clean without stripping off moisture.

Masks

I change my mask from time to time or I double or multi-mask depending on my skin condition that time. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Origins charcoal mask

CTTO:google images
This is a wash off mask that promises to deep clean. This does the job but it leaves the skin a bit dry. I paired this with other origins products.

  • Humanheartnature Detoxifying Mask+Scrub

This is a new favorite. It’s an all natural product that doubles as a scrub. Use it dry as a mask and wet as a scrub. I like it because it’s not that abrasive. This lifts off any dirt on my face even white heads. Sometimes you just need to wipe it off using a towel but most of the time I pair this with a peel off mask to deep clean my pores.

  • Iwhite korea peel off mask

This is my preferred brand to match humanheartnature’s mask+scrub. This can be used alone also. I suggest you use iWhite pore purifying balm that comes with it for it to work well. This leaves my skin clean and a bit smoother.

  • Aztec Indian Healing Clay

The world’s best clay mask. I use this with Braggs apple cider vinegar instead of water. You just have to get past the smell but this works well. It deep cleans the face and leaves skin smooth. Unlike the humanheartnature, I use this alone since it literally strips away the moisture on my face (I feel cemented everytime I use this). Don’t forget to moisturize after using this.

Serum

I have yet to find the best serum but as of now, I’m using ejulai propolis. This leaves my skin supple and soft everytime I use it.

Sheet masks

I vary sheet masks from time to time. I like the moisturizing, calming and brightening variants. I prefer buying from the face shop but innisfree masks are also great.

Moisturizer

Currently using humanheartnature’s day and night moisturizer. I tried to switch to all natural products and this does the job. This leaves my skin moisturized and the scent is subtle so it doesn’t bother me.

Image result for clinique dramatically different moisturizing lotion

photo from google

When I really want to pamper myself, I use Clinique’s dramatically different lotion. I also use this when my skin is extremely dry.

Sunblock

I’m currently alternating between two sunblocks. One is Happy Skin’s Catch the Sun SPF 40 PA+++ while the other one is Belo Beauty’s tinted sunscreen.

I personally prefer Happy Skin’s sunblock because I feel that this is easily absorbed by the skin and it doesn’t cause white heads. It also layers beautifully under makeup although I don’t use this as a primer (because it’s a sunblock not a primer). It’s lightweight and I feel that it’s a bit moisturizing. I sometimes use this on my body too.

On the other hand, when I have to have a little bit of coverage while having sun protection, I use Belo’s tinted sunscreen. I just make sure I exfoliate or even mask afterwards since I feel that the tint clogs up my pores.

BODY

Soap

I use Humanheartnature’s lavender mint soap in which I have a review on. Click here.

Exfoliator

I use St Ives Apricot both on my face and body. I sometimes alternate this with the Humanheartnature’s detoxifying mask+scrub, the one that I discussed earlier. I like that it’s not too fine and it’s not too rough and both of them leaves my skin feeling smoother afterwards. I exfoliate once or twice a week.

Nivea in shower lotion

This is my holy grail. I don’t like the additional step of going out of the shower and putting on sticky lotion. I hate the sticky feeling that comes with regular lotion so for something that I could rinse off the slimy feeling away, I highly recommend this product. Continued use improves skin’s appearance. It really moisturizes the skin.

Overall thoughts:

Currently loving the condition of my skin. I rarely have pimples and I can comfortably go outside without makeup. Going more natural really helped my skin.

Skin care

Belo tinted sunscreen

Having a good sunscreen is a necessity right now. May it be for the beach or everday, sunscreen helps us take care of our skin while we carry out with our activities.

Recently, Filipino YouTubers have been raving about this product. That was probably a sponsored post but I still decided to try it out myself.

Product description:

Belo SunExpert Tinted Sunscreen is rated SPF50 and PA++++ for broad spectrum protection against harmful UV rays. Its light tint benefits from Tone Adapt Technology that evens out your skin tone and conceals fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots. And it has Cell Protect defends against premature skin aging.

From: the sample room

Price

I got my 10ml tube for less than 200 pesos. Im not sure if it’s 150 or 199.

Application

This product says that it should be applied with the hands. This product dries quickly but gives you time to work it in and blend it.

Feel/Appearance

It doesn’t feel tacky nor drying. It sets as a matte finish. Sheer coverage for this one so for me having the tint is unnecessary. If you have flawless skin then yes, but my redness still shows up.

I also saw that after wearing it for quite some time, it settles in my pores. I also wouldn’t recommend this to people with dry skin because it might flake out on you.

Longevity

The coverage is sheer from the start so I don’t think it lasted long but I’m sure the sun protection lasted long.

Packaging

It comes in a squeezy tube for both sizes. Hygienic and travel friendly.

Overall thoughts

It’s an okay product, however, I will not repurchase it. I don’t like that it settles on my pores. I would just use my regular sunscreen since it doesn’t give much coverage anyway.

Jeffree Star Cosmetics Lip Scrub

My love for lipstick both have pros and cons. One of the cons is that it leaves my lips dry and chapped.

I have finished my lush mint julep scrub and tried one of the youtube’s raved about lip scrubs: jeffree star cosmetics’ velour lip scrub

About the product

Lip Scrub “Pancakes & Syrup” from the Star Family Collection!

Use our delicious sugar based lip scrub to prep your lips before applying any liquid lipstick. Take a scoop out and rub your mouth in circular motions. Lick away excess (yes, it’s edible!) or wipe off with a tissue.

This product is: Vegan. 100% cruelty-free. Paraben & Gluten-Free. (30G. / 1OZ.)

Ingredients: Sucrose, Glycerin, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Silica, Fragrance (Pancakes & Syrup), Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Tocopherol, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, CI 168 (Caramel).

Grabbed from jeffree star cosmetics website

Use

I think the small tub will last for a long time since I only swirl the pads of my ring finger on top of the tub and that’s enough for my whole lips.

It’s not as rough as the one from Lush but it has the same immediate effect. However, I feel that the effects wear off easily and more consistent use is needed. I forgot to use this for 2-3 weeks and that left my lips a little rough.

Effect

Initially this did leave my lips smoother and exfoliated. Lipsticks applied better right after this was used. However, I suggest this to be used regularly to get the full effect.

Overall thoughts

Currently using this one and I am not disappointed with the product. Bonus that JSC is the only one with this flavor for a lipscrub 🙂

Human Nature Lavender Mint Cleansing bar

I’m a sucker for anything with lavander and/or mint. I love how it’s relaxing and it smells so good.

When I saw this cleansing bar in All Day Supermarket, I immediately had to try it. Bonus points that it’s from an all natural local brand.

The lavender mint cleansing bar

As my first product from human nature, I have to say that I love this product. True to the claims, it keeps my skin smooth and supple with just a few washes. This soap smells really good and helps in calming me down when I’m stressed. It’s good since I start my day calm and collected making me ready for the day.

It’s packaged well, it could compete to foreign and more commercial brands with a paper box. The soap itself is packaged in plastic, which I wish they did without to stay true to their pro-environment cause.

A con would be that I feel that I went through it quickly. Probably because of its ingredients, the soap felt softer and it melted quicker than most bar soaps.

Overall verdict

I am currently in my second bar of soap. I love this product and I would continue to use this product. This made me want to try more from this brand.

15 days of lipstick: Dior Lip Maximizer Collagen Activ

I’m not a huge fan of pumping glosses because I feel that my lips are already okay the way it is and I also hate anything that would have a tingling feeling on my lips however, I still tried out to see if it works.

Product Information

What it is:
Dior’s must-have accessory for luscious, full lips.

What it does:
Give your lips a kiss of instant volume and shine with this invigorating lip plumper. The rich blend of collagen and marine-based fillers smooth and moisturize the appearance of the skin, leaving lips gorgeous and voluptuous. After just 15 days of use, your lips will look noticeably fuller and more defined. Smile big and enjoy the tingly, cooling effect of this formula, rather than the sometimes-painful sting associated with other lip plumpers. The soft vanilla-mint scent and sheer pink tint make this lip necessity gorgeous alone or as a volumizing base or topcoat.

What else you need to know:
Dior Addict Lip Maximizer Plumping Gloss was born from backstage beauty secrets, taking inspiration from makeup artists who used extreme measures like pepper powder to achieve the perfect runway pout. Now you can get the same glam results in an instant with this feel-good, delicious formula—pepper-free, of course.

Price

This costs $33.00 based on the sephora website.

Quality

I can’t review this based on my usuals which is color payoff or longevity since this is more of lipcare rather than an actual lip makeup. We’ll go to a different path, a narrative this time.

So how it went:

I wore this product alone to see if it at least has a sheer tint to it. Product description said that it’s more tingly than painful but it wasn’t the best feeling for me either. It was a tolerable kind of “pain” but as I have said, I am not a fan of anything tingly and painful on my lips. To describe it, it’s more of a light burning sensation which mind you lasts for quite a bit.

It was translucent for me. No tinge of pink whatsoever which was disappointing for me.

Using it once didn’t impress me, I didn’t notice an instant plumping effect which to be honest some lip plumpers do with just one application.

Overall thoughts:

Not a huge fan. It’s too pricey for me and it didn’t wow me. I wasn’t a fan of the burning sensation also.

I know people have been raving about this but it’s not for me.
